2/9/22 Southeast Lower Peninsula, Michigan DNR Fishing Report

Panfish anglers were finding success in inland lakes for panfish and pike while jigging off drop offs and flats in 10 to 20 feet of water with live bait (spikes, mousies and waxworms) as well as plastics. For pike, use tip-ups adjacent to weed edges with live bait.

Lake Erie: There were varying reports of success out of Metropark for yellow perch. Spoons tipped with spikes and waxworms were producing the most success. Panfish were also targeted. Jigs tipped with waxworms and spikes seemed to be most effective.

Lake St. Clair: There were reports of a tough bite for large yellow perch. A lot of sorting through small
perch to find the larger ones. Anglers were having success out of Selfridge in 7 to 9 feet of water. Anglers also found a good mix of panfish and perch in canals and shallower water.

Saginaw Bay: On the west side of the bay, walleye were caught at the blackhole in Pinconning in 25 feet of water. Walleye were also caught at the cigar in front of Linwood in 18-23 feet of water and at the old dumping grounds in 20 feet of water. Some yellow perch were also caught at these locations. Anglers were also catching yellow perch at the spark plug in 25 feet of water. On the east side of the bay, fishing for yellow perch from Sebwaing to Bay Port had been hit or miss with lots of small perch to sort through. Those doing best were waiting for schools of perch to move to them. Anglers reported northern pike in the same areas while perch fishing.

Saginaw River: Anglers reported slow fishing through most of Bay City and Essexville, with a lot of sub legal walleye caught and released in this area. Upstream in the south end of Bay City at Cass Avenue and in the vicinity, anglers did well catching good numbers of walleye with some limits taken. Anglers did well in this area fishing the edge of the channel in 20 to 25 feet of water jigging a blue and silver or orange jigging Rapala. Anglers should plan to do lots of sorting. Most walleye were running in the 13 to 16-inch size range. Elsewhere walleye fishing was pretty slow at all points upstream around the Zillwaukee Bridge and through Saginaw.

2/9/20 Northeast Lower Peninsula, Michigan Fishing Report

Tawas: Perch fishing continued to be slow with some smaller fish caught in 12 to 20 feet of water off minnows and waxworms. A few walleye were caught in 15 to 22 feet of water off jigs and spoons tipped with minnows.

Au Gres: Some small perch and walleye were caught in the Au Gres river off jigs and spoons tipped with minnows. There were some reports of walleye caught out past Pt. Au Gres (Access off Booth Rd.) in 20 to 25 feet of water off jigs and spoons tipped with minnows.

Pine River: Perch fishing was slow with lots of sorting to keep a few. Anglers were catching perch in 5 to 10 feet of water off jigs tipped with minnows or jack hooks / spoons. Walleye anglers were venturing out as far as 1 to 5 miles, catching a few fish in 12 to 20 feet of water, off jigs and spoons tipped with minnows. The evening bite was performing the best.

Southwest Lower Peninsula

Gun Lake: Anglers were catching bluegill, yellow perch and black crappie off the state park beach and launch areas. Wax worms and small jigs were working best.

Gull Lake: Anglers were catching smelt, yellow perch and northern pike. Smelt action was best at night in 60 to 70 feet of water.

Murray Lake: Anglers were catching bluegill, northern pike and crappie. Anglers were catching crappie in the evening with small live emerald shiners on a small gold hook.

Wabasis Lake: Anglers were catching perch, bluegill, northern pike and walleye. There is good access to the lake on the west end at the county park boat launch.

1/25/2019 Northwest Lower Peninsula Michigan Fishing Report

Walloon Lake:Continues to produce a few perch for those using minnows. A good spot in the winter is near the narrows at the base of the West Arm.

Lake St. Claire: Anglers have been catching crappies, perch and bluegills. 

Lake Skegemog: Had decent perch fishing. 
Lake Missaukee: Ice anglers are taking some bluegill and crappie. For pike, try along the east side.   
Thumb Lake: Ice anglers are catching splake on minnows. 
Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell: Ice fishing is going strong, and anglers were still doing decent especially for walleye and pike. Bluegill numbers were up and down. Walleye anglers were jigging or using tip-ups in 10 to 15 feet. Pike are hitting mainly on tip-ups. Kentwood Park on Lake Cadillac was producing some nice crappie. On Lake Mitchell, bluegill and crappie were found out from Small Cove.
Hamlin Lake: Anglers were using Wilson Hill Park to access the lake, though anglers are still being advised to use caution as there may be thin spots. Catch rates slowed, with most getting 10 fish or less. Though the numbers were down, the size of the fish has been decent, with a few big crappie mixed in with the bluegills. The perch were small at 3-5 inches. Those targeting pike had limited success, and many of those caught were undersize. A few walleye were caught. Near the South Bayou, anglers were struggling to find keeper-size bluegill. 
Mecosta County: Inland lakes in the area were producing bluegills, crappie and some perch. Pike anglers are taking fish on tip-ups or with spears. 
Traverse City: Crappies and bluegills have been caught on Arbutus and Spider lakes, where there was about 5 inches of ice. Caution is advised any time you venture out on the ice. As of last week fresh run of steelhead had run up the Boardman River and anglers were catching a few fish.

1/25/2019 Northeast Lower Peninsula Michigan DNR Fishing Report

Grand Lake Alpena: Currently has about 10 inches of ice on it with anglers catching walleye and perch.  

Otsego Lake: Had a good number of anglers, and those seeking them managed to catch a couple fish up to 20 inches on tip-ups or when jigging blue minnows in 10 to 14 feet. Smaller fish were caught in shallower waters. Schools of perch were seen; however, they did not want to bite. Lake sturgeon between 48-50 inches were caught when jigging blue minnows or with tip-ups in 5 to 8 feet. The better action was at dusk and after dark. 

Lake Fifteen: In Montmorency County was producing some smelt.

Higgins Lake: Perch were caught in 20 to 40 feet near the Main Island and the Sunken Island. Good pike action with a few fish over 20 pounds were taken off Sam-O-Set Road and the South State Park. Lake trout were caught by those jigging or using tip-ups with minnows in 80 to 100 feet. 
Rainbow trout were found off the Conference Center and Big Creek when using wigglers in shallow waters. A few smelt were taken off the west launch, Big Creek and the North State Park in the late evening. 

Houghton Lake: The East Bay has tightened up finally. The lake had about 6 inches of snow on top.  Catch rates were up and down as some are doing well while others were not getting many. The fish seem to be moving around, so don’t be afraid to go shallower or deeper than normal. Bluegills are still hitting wigglers and wax worms, and crappie are hitting small jigging spoons tipped with a minnow. Glow lures seem to work better. For walleye, try jigging spoons or jigging raps tipped with a minnow head. Pike are hitting tip-ups with golden shiners or sucker minnows. Anglers should watch for pressure cracks and are urged stay away from the deeper water leading from the main lake into the East Bay because of thin ice and/or open water. Other areas to avoid are near the Cut River, Muskegon River and Long Point.

Lake St. Helen: Is producing a few walleye in the First Lake for those using a Swedish pimple and small minnow. 

 Oscoda Area: Steelhead and Atlantic salmon are keeping anglers busy in the lower stretch of the Au Sable River. Wax worms and spawn fished right on the bottom have produced the best action. Ice on most of the inland lakes is running between 5 and 7 inches thick, but anglers are reminded to use caution and check the ice as you go. Those getting out on Indian and Cedar lakes report a mixed bag of bluegills and perch. Fair numbers of walleyes have been caught of blue shiners fished in Foote Dam Pond.  

Tawas: Ice anglers were out off Jerry’s Marina and fishing back in the “armpit.” Most were walking out to 15 to 20 feet. Catch rates have been slow, with only a couple walleye caught here and there. No good word on perch yet. 

Au Gres: Quite a few anglers were fishing down off the mouth of the Pine River and Palmer Road. Most were fishing in about 8 ½ feet of water and getting some walleye in the evening, though the action was not red-hot as most were only getting two to three fish per trip. Perch fishing was slow to fair.    
Au Gres River: Ice anglers on the lower river caught a few walleye and pike. They are getting a mix of small and legal-size fish.
